I hate blogger

Mikearoni & Plano:

I had a good ranting and raving post on the inadequacies of local business to compete with international chains, but Blogger didn't recognize a character and erased the whole thing. So here's my complaint in a nutshell:

1. You can buy coolness at Starbucks, but local coffee shops force you to grow it. My soil doesn't have the right nutrients to grow coolness, so I'll stick to buying grande mocha frappuccini instead of "medium gelati."

2. You just can't beat a 64-cent ice cream cone from McDonald's. 64 cents + fat free + a freakin ice cream cone = pure delight.

Superior products. Better service. Lower prices. That's why small businesses go out of business.

Hey- not all local businesses stink- what about Dee's Mediterranean, or Katie's Frozen Custard, etc. Yes, crappy local places will get wiped out by chains, however, good local places will always survive.

I submit El Conquistador and La Fiesta for the list. Additionally, since you hail from Hewitt these days, you should try Altos de Jaliscos on Hewitt Drive - good and inexpensive.

But 6:22 is right. Wal-Mart, Home Depot, and Lowe's have all come to Mt. Pleasant, 12 miles from my hometown. Yet the 100-year-old hardware store remains. Why? (1) Personal service. (2) Inventory = things a hardware store should have, nothing it shouldn't. (3) Saves you the trip to Mt. Pleasant.

I also hear there's a coffee shop across the street from the Academy, the "Pecan Valley Coffee Company." It seems to be giving Starbucks a run for its money, and rumor has it that Murphy is so jazzed he can't teach because every room has "danged pterodactyls!"
